Medical applications of ultrasound



We have all seen the pictures of pregnant women getting an ultrasound check with the help of sonography Systems from the doctor. Medical ultrasound, also known as sonography or ultrasonography is widely used to form an image of the fetus to check on the progress of the fetus, apart from this widespread use, ultrasound has many applications.


What is ultrasound?

Medical ultrasound is used to see internal body structures such as the internal blood organs, muscles, joints, tendons, and blood vessels. The main aim of getting an ultrasound done is to find the source of a disease. The famous obstetric ultrasound is the practice of examining pregnant women using a Voluson Ultrasound System

Applications of ultrasound

Given below are the lists of applications where ultrasound is used.

1.      Anesthesiology
Ultrasound is used to guide anesthesiologists with injecting the needle near the nerves.
2.      Cardiology
Ultrasound is used as echocardiography to check the function of the heart ventricles/ valves and to check the dilation of the parts of the heart.
3.      Gastroenterology/Colorectal surgery
Ultrasound is used to image solid organs of the abdomen such as the aorta, pancreases, inferior vena cava, gallbladder, kidneys, liver, spleen, and bile ducts.
4.      Angiology
Ultrasound is used to diagnose venous or arterial disease all over the body with the help of a Esaote Ultrasound System.

Other areas where ultrasound is used are ophthalmology (eyes), nephrology (kidneys), pulmonology (lungs), otolaryngology (head and neck), urology (urinary), gynecology (female pelvic organs), obstetrics (pregnancy), scrotal (testicles), musculoskeletal (soft tissues and bone surfaces) and in neonatology.
